About Drifting

Drifting is one of the most well known events in motorsport. Like, 'wheelies' for motorcycles drifting is considered as a skill that every car enthusiast should know. Drifting competitions are held across the world due to its popularity throughout the world. You can define drifting as the slipping of a car when the driver over steer it intentionally. Most of the drift competitions have points based on the drift angle as well as the exit speed. A drift car race winner is the one who can do extremely wide drifts without hitting the car and still maintain a good exit speed.
Drifting was first introduced in Japan as a motorsport and the inventor of the game is also from Japan. There are several drifting pioneers from Japan who contributed to the sport. Kunimitsu Takahashi is considered as the founder of drifting. He was a motorcycle racer and invented drifting techniques way back in 1970's. He was noted for his high exit speeds and angle but the sport didn't have worldwide recognition those days.
The sport became popular to the world in 1987, when Keiichi Tsuchiya another Japanese racer who was inspired from Takahashi displayed his skills to the world through a video of him presenting his drifting techniques. However, it took around another ten years for a drifting competition to be held outside Japan but even at that time, the game was help by a Japanese magazine. This was in 1996, at California.
Keiichi Tsuchiya inspired several motorsports racers worldwide and even some of the present drifting champions. Once the sport became popular several worldwide competitions were organized. Among the drifting competitions, D1 Drifting which is organized in Japan is the most popular one. Drifting competition uses point systems based on several factors to determine the winner.

Some of the important features of this game are:
  • Points are determined on the basis of speed, angle and style.
  • If a racer overtakes another car during a drift, he is considered as a winner. Similarly, if someone overtakes a car while maintaining grip, he will not be considered as a winner.
  • Rear engine cars are widely used in drifting competitions. Occasionally, AWD (All Wheel Drive) competitions are also held.
  • Drifting to high angles bring a racer huge points. However, if the car spins, he will lose points. Simply put, a driver should maintain a drifting condition but the car should not spin.
  • Following the rival car as close as possible increases the points.
  • Maintaining drifting throughout the race is very important and is the major determining factor of the winner.
Drifting is largely popular and most of the people are familiar with the sport through movies and video games such as Need for Speed series. Even though most of the drift cars have rear wheel drive mechanism, cars like Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Lancer are also used in drifting competitions due to their rally racing capabilities. However, such cars need a lot of modification from suspension to drive trains to qualify for drifting.
